ABOUT
The Adult Gymnastics British Championships has a long history of being the National competition in the UK for masters athletes. It is open to all British citizens (regardless of age or gymnastics experience) who would like to experience a friendly, supportive, but at the same time a competitive atmosphere, and compete for British titles within their age group and competitive level. It is organised once a year by the UK’s governing body for gymnastics, British Gymnastics. As in previous years, the 2023 edition of this competition was held at the UK’s top gymnastics centre at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on the 5th and 6th of August 2023.
Unfortunately, British Gymnastics chooses not to award medals on individual apparatuses for masters athletes, but only for all-around competitors. I very much hope that will change, and the top gymnasts on each apparatus will be awarded their well-deserved accomplishment as it is the case in any proper gymnastics competition.
MY PERFORMANCE
This competition was an important moment of my sports career as it was the first time when I competed in a UK’s National level competition, albeit for masters athletes. After obtaining my British citizenship in 2020, this was my first opportunity to take part in a National level event. Moreover, I had the opportunity to represent my gymnastics club, Kensington & Chelsea Gymnastics Academy (previously known as Chelsea Gymnastics Academy). In this competition, I competed at the MAG Pro Over 30 category on Floor (score: 12.700), Pommel Horse (score: 10.300), Rings (score: 10.800), and Parallel bars (score: 10.600), which made the minimum of 4 apparatuses in order to be considered for the All-around competition. I was awarded the Bronze medal in the All-around within my age category, which was a fantastic achievement.
