18th MSA Conference & 16th FIEP European Congress - Dubrovnik 2021

ABOUT THE CONGRESS

The annual scientific conference of the Montenegrin Sports Academy (MSA) is the main event of the MSA. It has been organised since the inauguration in 2003, and nowadays, the conference ranks amongst the leading sports scientific congresses in the Balkans. This year the Conference was joined with the FIEP European Congress, and it was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from 8 to 11 April, 2021. FIEP Congresses are organised by the International Federation of Physical Education (Fédération Internationale d’Education Physique – FIEP), which was founded in 1923 and it is the oldest institution in the field of Physical Education. Delegates who could not fly to Dubrovnik due to the pandemic restrictions presented their research virtually.

OUR CONTRIBUTION

At this conference, I presented virtually our study on nutrition of female yoga practitioners. Together, with my colleagues, Assoc. Prof. Dr Lubomir Petrov PhD, Assoc. Prof. Deyana Vankova PhD from Bulgaria, and Deidre Douglas EdD from the USA, we conducted a study on the diet of yoga practitioners with different levels of experience. The nutritional assessment of the yoga participants, especially those with more than 5 years of experience in yoga, corresponded with the recommendations for a healthy diet. Our presentation was part of the oral presentations from the official scientific programme at the MSA-FIEP Conference 2021. After the Congress, our study was built upon further and the complete findings were published in the ..., Vol.??(1), 2021 (coming soon).

Nutritional assessment of female yoga practitioners with different levels of experience

ABSTRACT

Yoga includes many components for a healthy lifestyle such as physical exercises, abstaining from tobacco, stress management and a low-fat diet. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the nutrition of yoga practitioners and to compare it with international guidelines for a healthy diet. METHODS: This study comprised 89 female yoga practitioners from Bulgaria. The nutrient intake was assessed by using a food frequency questionnaire based on the USDA National Nutrient Database. The relative intake of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, energy contribution of each nutrient, and the total daily energy intake and relative energy intake were calculated. RESULTS: The BMI of the yoga practitioners was near the lower normal limit (18.5 kg/m2). Only 3 practitioners were overweight. The yoga practitioners consumed small amounts of pork and beef and around 60% did not consume any meat at all. They consumed an average of 600 g of fruits and vegetables per day, which complies with the 400 g recommended by the WHO. CONCLUSION: Practising yoga helps to maintain normal weight which is one of the prerequisites for a healthy lifestyle. The nutritional assessment of the yoga participants corresponded with the recommendations of the WHO and the American Cancer Society Guidelines for a healthy diet.
