Year 2018

Dr Stefan Kolimechkov

Dr Stefan Kolimechkov

On 30 May 2018, at the age of 30, I was officially admitted to the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The year of 2018 was the year of my lifetime in which one dream came true. I completed my PhD degree with a huge success and outstanding official defence. It was an absolute honor to present my Doctoral Dissertation in front of an audience, including the Scientific Jury for this Official PhD Defence, lecturers and researchers from three departments of the National Sports Academy (Biochemistry and Physiology, Gymnastics, and Physical Education), as well as parents of the gymnasts I coached and their children.

I published three peer-reviewed articles in a collaboration with my supervisors and colleagues.

  • In July we published our software BeepShuttle Junior in the Journal of Advanced Sport Technology. This software was especially created as part of my PhD study, and I presented it last year at the FIEP Congress in Luxembourg. Now, the software for assessing aerobic fitness of children and adolescents is available for purchase.
  • Again in July, we completed a study on the functional state of female karate practitioners during a Karate competition, by measuring changes in the concentration of capillary blood lactate. The study was supported by grant from the National Sports Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria, and it was published in the European Journal of Physical Education and Sport Science. Following its acceptance I was invited to become the Editor-in-Chief of the the journal, after being part of its International Editorial Board since April 2017.
  • In November, we published an article on a newly created programmed kumite model, which is close to high intensity bouts in competitive conditions in Shotokan karate. The study was published in the Archives of Budo Science of Martial Arts and Extreme Sports, and it is my first article published in a journal indexed in Web of Science, which speaks for the quality of the journal and the accepted study.

In addition to that, I presented our research at two international scientific conferences (BASES Conference in the UK and the FIEP Congress in Turkey), and co-authored abstracts in another two conferences held in Bulgaria.

For a third year in a row I was selected for the FANS & FACS Schemes, which provide free access for National and County Sports People to sporting facilities in North London. This pass enabled me to train more often and better prepare myself for future sports events. Thank you to Enfield Council and Fusion Lifestyle for that support.
